Your driver will pick you up at your Fes riad/hotel about 8:30 a.m. to begin your 5-day desert trip. Fes to Marrakech through Merzouga, then to the Sahara desert and the Erg Chebbi sand dunes.
An 8-hour trek through the Atlas Mountains to Tafilalet, southern Morocco’s biggest oasis, comprising of several villages, palmers, and two significant Saharan cities, Erfoud and Rissani.
We will stop along the way in the alpine village of Ifrane, Azrou cedar forest where the monkeys live, Midelt for lunch, and Ziz valley for panoramic and magnificent views over the palm trees, the green valley in the center of the Sahara. Then we’ll go to the Erg Chebbi sand dunes.
We travel further into the arid scenery until we reach the dunes in the midst of nothing. Dinner and overnight at a hotel with a pool along the dune line of Erg Chebbi to unwind on the first night of your 5-day desert trip from Fes to Marrakech.
Today we will tour the desert area and the wonder that is the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. We will do a circle of the desert dunes where you will be able to view the nomad way of life and the spectacular shifting contrasts of the desert.
Then go to Khamlia’s “black village” to observe the Gnawa musicians. In the old city of Rissani, there’s also a classic Berber pizza for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll ride camels to witness the sunset over the dunes before spending the night in a desert tent.
We will eat a traditional tagine meal, sip excellent mint tea, and listen to traditional Berber music while viewing the stars and the rising moon in the magnificent Sahara desert.
Before returning to our desert accommodation, we will get up early to view the finest dawn of your life, creating varied shadows and hues over the sea of sand dunes, the tallest in Morocco.
After breakfast, we will go to Tinghir and the beautiful Todra Valley, Morocco’s tallest and narrowest gorge. The gorge is ideal for trekking and lounging on the river’s side, as well as enjoying some traditional Berber cuisine.
After lunch in the middle of the canyon, we’ll travel through the Dades Valley, where we’ll spend the night at a lovely hotel on the mountain’s crest.
After breakfast at the hotel, we set off on our trek down the 1000 Thousand Kasbahs Road, which has massive kasbahs on both sides of the road. Some of the ancient fortified homes have been repaired, but the most of them remain in ruins.
We will travel through Dades Valley and up to the mountainous area via an off-road trail where there are many Berber villages and a few nomads living in caves. Here, we will have the opportunity to visit one of these families and learn about their daily lives and main activity of looking after goats and sheep herds.
Before we get to the Skoura palm grove, we will be amazed by the panoramas of the beautiful rose valley. We go 45 kilometers farther to Ouarzazate for supper and stay at the hotel.
After breakfast, we’ll go to Taourirt Kasbah before heading to Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will next go to Telouet, a classic High Atlas Berber settlement, and the Kasbah el Glaoui.
We’ll stop for lunch in Telouet before descending the Tizi-n-Tichka to Marrakech, where our 5-day desert vacation from Fes to Marrakech through Merzouga Sahara comes to a close.
